Could 3D-printed neural implants link brains to computers?

A collaborative team of researchers from the University of Sheffield (UK), St Petersburg State University (Russia) and Technische Universität Dresden (Germany) has developed 3D-printed neural implants that could be used for the development of treatments for problems associated with the nervous system. Described in Nature Biomedical Engineering, a prototype of an implant has been capable of stimulating the spinal cord of animal models with spinal cord injuries. The team hopes that this preliminary research could be progressed to be applied to the development of treatments for paralysis in human patients.
