Creality Ender 5 Plus 3D Printer – Review the Specs

Bigger Dimensions

The last Ender released, the Ender 5, came with a build volume of 220 x 220 x 300 mm. A pretty standard print volume, but let’s be honest: It’s always good to have some extra space for bigger prints.

The Ender 5 Plus offers much more spacious print bed dimensions: the glass bed boasts an area of 350 x 350 mm, while the Z-axis stretches to 400mm. That‘s even bigger than the print volume on Creality’s CR-10S, which sat at a spacious 300 x 300 x 400mm. So be prepared to free up some space in your workshop.

Rigid Z-Axis

One of the biggest drawbacks of tall fused filament fabrication (FFF) printers is Z-Wobble, resulting in visible layer lines. This printing failure mostly occurs when the Z-axis rods aren’t perfectly straight or incorrectly mounted.

Creality tries to solve the problem by not only throwing in a second rod but six overall. Two of them connect directly to the stepper motors (one on each side), while the other four function as guide rails. This should mean you get more coherent layers even in taller prints.

Added BL Touch Sensor

Auto-leveling is an alien concept on stock Ender printers – until now, that is. Thanks to Antclabs’ contact-triggered BLTouch proximity sensor (more about it here), the bed will level itself after an initial manual bed-leveling process. The firmware will then compensate to avoid problems.

Gantry Design

The Ender 5 series uses a Gantry design, with the print head is mounted at the top of the printer. As a print progresses, the bed lowers through the Z-axis.

Each axis has a dedicated stepper motor. In a quite unusual way, the Y-axis 42-48 motor drives both lead screws at the same time. This should result in an overall smoother movement. The Z-axes are mounted in the middle of the bed with a large 8-mm-rods stabilizing each side.

Additional Notes

  • Filament sensor and power failure resume are commonplace now, making a welcome return in the Ender 5 Plus.
  • The Ender 5 Plus features a V2.2 Creality mainboard, not the most modern available, but a capable board that has proven itself in the Ender 3 and Ender 3 Pro.
  • The power brick and the 4.3-inch touchscreen are now located at the base of the printer.
  • The machine comes pre-built and should be up and running in half an hour.
